This portable hand drum, in style and shape, is similar to the doumbek of Arabian origins. The Djembe (jem-bay) also known as djimbe, jembe, jenbe, yembe or sanbanyi in Susu; is a skin covered hand drum shaped like a large goblet and is meant to be played with bare hands. The Djembe appears to have originated in Africa. Djembe drums have been popular throughout the French colonial territories of West Africa, with possible origins as far back as 2,000 years.

It's possible that the Djembe and the Dumbek have some ancient, shared origins as the Egyptian empire expanded south into Africa. Nonetheless, the Djembe was a common instrument in the African French colonies and the Dumbek was more frequently found in the Ottoman Empire.
By all accounts, core jembe traditions come from Mali and Guinea, and appear to be of Maninka/Susu origin. The homeland of the Maninka is called Mande and is located roughly between Kankan, Guinea and Bamako, Mali (see map). Maninka is a local pronunciation of Mande-nka, which means person from Mande. The name "Djembe" is the French interpretation of this instrument. There are no references to what its original African name might have been.

The djembe is said to contain three spirits: the shell, the goat skin, and the spirit of the maker. Some consider the djembe female. The djembe spelling with the "dj" comes from the fact that French has no hard "j" sound like that found in English. Anyway you spell it, the djembe became popular in French Music during post World War II.
Traditionally, djembes drums are about 12" (30cm) in diameter, varying an inch or two, but can be found in sizes from 5" (13cm) up to 18" (46cm) depending on the size of the player.
